Atheists probably make up only about 5% of the world’s population, but their influence is much greater than that statistic would suggest. A group calling themselves the “New Atheists” are aggressive in arguing that religious belief is not only a puerile fairy tale, but that it is the major source of conflict and dysfunction in modern societies.

The arguments presented by the New Atheists are increasingly taken up in our secular culture and are commonly heard in the media, in education, and in public policy discussions. In the face of such attacks on their faith – their Church – most Catholics, even well-educated Catholics, have been at a loss to know what to think, let alone what to say. As a rule Catholics simply haven’t had the facts or the arguments they need to challenge the misinformation.

This is a 45 minute talk aimed at providing Catholics with the information and arguments they need to respond.

Fraser Field is founder and managing editor of The Catholic Education Resource Center (www.catholiceducation.org<http://www.catholiceducation.org/) the busiest Catholic web site in Canada with over two and a half million visitors last year. In 2007, Fraser was awarded the Archbishop Adam Exner Award for Catholic Excellence in Public Life in Canada. His articles on faith and culture have appeared in the National Post, the Vancouver Sun, and many Catholic newspapers and magazines throughout North America.
